Fans of J.K. Rowling’s infamous seven-volume fantasy Harry Potter series should definitely check out her latest instalment in the franchise. Now, nineteen years later, we see how the legendary “boy who lived” navigates the trials of parenthood and his son’s efforts to cope with the suffocating expectations of living up to his father’s famous and heroic reputation. Tracing themes of the original series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child follows another young wizard’s coming of age story, as he not only battles evil but also struggles to come to terms with the responsibilities, losses and burdens of childhood. As the son of the “chosen one”, Albus Potter is left as an outsider with a desire to prove himself against his overprotective father, further fueling the growing antagonism and distance between them. Will Harry be able to reconcile their relationship before it reaches the point of no return?

Based on the original new story co-written by J.K Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne, the new screenplay Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth instalment in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. Divided into two distinct parts consisting of two acts each, the play received its world premiere in London’s West End on 30th July 2016.

Along with other notable playwrights, Rowling opens the doors, once again, to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to a new generation of magical students. You’ll be sure to meet many familiar faces as well as some new characters that bring many shocking twists and turns and where the fate of the Wizarding World, once again, hangs in the balance. It’s a race against time, travelling back and forth through timelines, to uncover dark mysteries and dig up the past that Harry Potter swore to leave behind over nineteen years ago.

About the Playscript:

The screenplay is considered to take a more mature approach than J. K. Rowling’s original series, highlighting significant themes such as parenthood and relationships, reputation and expectation, and bravery and sacrifice. In a clever reconstruction of the developments recalling specific events in the earlier Harry Potter novels, fans of the original series will experience the nostalgia of Harry’s childhood and also get a new insight into the history between Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort. Nonetheless, whilst the original trio have grown older and more mature, teenagers and children will still no less relate to Albus and Scorpius as they navigate through their own trials and tribulations as they enter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the complete and unabridged playscript of the award-winning West End production. This edition includes the final dialogue and stage directions of the original two-part play, a conversation piece between director John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne, the potter family tree, and a timeline of the key events in the wizarding world leading up to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

From the Publisher:

Part One:

It has been nineteen years since Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger saved the wizarding world at the Battle of Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling’s 2007 final instalment Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, the famous trio are back on an extraordinary new adventure, joined by a brave new generation of wizards that’s only just arrived at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn't much easier now that he is an overworked employee as the Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and a father of three school-age children. Once more, the arches of Kings Cross become the gateway to a wild, time-bending adventure as young Albus Severus Potter, Harry’s now second son, boards a waiting Hogwarts Express, preparing to fulfil his own destiny. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son, Albus, struggles with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. After breaking the Potter tradition of being sorted into Gryffindor, Albus is sorted into Slytherin and forms an unlikely friendship alongside Scorpius Malfoy- the son of Harry’s former nemesis, Draco Malfoy. Unlike both their fathers’ former childhood rivalry, both Albus and Scorpius find solace in their friendship after being shunned by the school for their fathers’ reputation. Their friendship becomes critical as they co-depend on each other to build the foundations of kindness and mutual respect amidst the harsh expectations of their peers.

Meanwhile, at the Ministry of Magic, Amos Diggery tries to convince Harry to use one of the last seized time-turners to bring back his late son, Cedric Diggery. After overhearing the conversation, Albus and Scorpius decide to take it upon themselves to fix Harry’s mistake in refusing Amos causing a chaotic whirlwind of timelines and alternate universes in their wake. Can the pair quickly fix their mistakes and get home safely to their own timelines?

Part two:

After being stuck in a battle of mind-bending timelines and alternate universes, resulting in a reality where Lord Voldemort wins the Battle of Hogwarts, and Harry Potter is dead, Scorpius is left on his own to figure out how to restore the original timeline with the help of the final members of a dwindling anti-Voldemort resistance movement. With the help of the alternate Ron Weasely, Hermione Granger and Severus Snape, Albus and Scorpius manage to return home to their original timeline and are finally reunited with their parents. But what happens when an unlikely character claiming to be Lord Voldemort’s daughter emerges with the plan of stealing the last remaining time-turner to bring the Dark Lord back to life once more? The boys must travel together once more through time to make things right, entering significantly life-altering timelines including discovering what really happened that night at Godric’s Hollow when the evil Lord Voldemort killed Harry Potter’s parents. As the past and the present collide, both father and son are locked in a race through time as they battle mysterious forces, all while the future (and the past) hangs in the balance
