Dav Pilkey is an American author, illustrator and cartoonist that is behind some of the most well-known children's book series, Captain Underpants and Dog-Man. Pilkey was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and often would disrupt the classroom, resulting in him being sent out of class a lot. During these times, he would often write stories or draw cartoons for his own entertainment. Pilkey has channelled his vivid imagination with creative storytelling to create some of the most beloved characters in children's literature.
Pilkey's books provide humour with the overall kind-hearted nature of humanity. His books are designed to be easy to read and follow whilst keeping children entertained throughout. The books encourage children to use their imagination and unlock their own creative potential, as well as encourage them to read in their spare time.
Captain Underpants Books
Since the first book was published in 1997, Captain Underpants has gone on to be an international bestseller and has been translated into over twenty languages. The success of the series may be down to the relatability of the two main characters, best friends Harold and George. The two boys are fourth graders, 9-10-year-olds, from Ohio who create an underpants-wearing superhero out of their mean school principal.
There are a total of twelve books in the series, as well as additional activity books and spin-offs. Captain Underpants books are aimed at readers aged 7+. The award-winning series was even made into a movie called Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. The film was released in 2017 and starred Kevin Hart, Ed Helms and Jordan Peele.
Dog-Man Graphic Novels
As well as the infamous Captain Underpants, Dav Pilkey is also responsible for creating Dog-Man, the crime-fighting policeman with a dog's head. The books continue with the adventures of George and Harold as they look back on an old comic strip they made together in Kindergarten and decide to continue the adventure. A great gift idea for fans of Dog-Man or Captain Underpants is our Dog Man 1-10: The Supa Buddies Mega Collection 10 Books Box Set. This set features some hilarious adventures, including Dog Man Unleashed, A Tale of Two Kitties, Grime and Punishment and Mothering Heights.
As of 2022, there are eleven Dog-Man comic books. There is also a spin-off series which features Cat-Kid, a character introduced in the main series. We have a selection available for Cat-Kid books, including Cat Kid Comic Club, Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives and Cat Kid Comic Club: On Purpose.
