Description:

A Christmas Carol
On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by a series of ghosts, starting with his old business partner, Jacob Marley. The three spirits which follow, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, show Scrooge how his mean behaviour has affected those around him. At the end of the story, he is relieved to discover that there is still time for him to change, and we see him transformed into a generous and kind-hearted human being.

Oliver Twist
For all of his early life, Oliver is hungry and poor. Then he runs away to London, where he soon makes new friends – but kind old Fagin and the Artful Dodger are not quite what they seem.

The Old Curiosity Shop
Meet little Nell Trent, a sweet, unselfish girl; her grandfather; and the evil dwarf Quilp. When Little Nell’s grandfather gambles away his curiosity shop to the moneylender Quilp, the girl and the old man flee London. The penniless pair wander the countryside, always in fear of being cornered by Quilp.

Great Expectations
This classic story follows Pip's childhood and young adult years, as a blacksmith's apprentice in a country village. He suddenly comes into a large fortune (his great expectations) from a mysterious benefactor and moves to London, where he enters high society. He thinks he knows where the money has come from, but he turns out to be sadly mistaken. The story also follows Pip's dealings with Estella, a young woman he adores but who cannot return his love.

Nicholas Nickleby
The dramatic tale of the adventures of a young man as he struggles to seek his fortune in Victorian England. Upon the death of his father, 19-year-old Nicholas Nickleby is sent by his uncle, Ralph Nickleby, a mean-spirited moneylender, to serve as an assistant teacher at Dotheboys' Hall.

Hard Times
In Coketown, there's no place for imagination. There are facts and figures and absolutely nothing else or so Thomas Gradgrind thinks. When the circus appears in town, it brings Sissy Jupe with it. A young girl has been abandoned by her father and is taken in by Thomas Gradgrind. Full of fun and energy, will Sissy save the Gradgrind children from a life of fact-and-figure-filled misery before it's too late?

A Tale of Two Cities
The two cities referred to in the title were London, England, and Paris, France, at the time of the French Revolution. During the French Revolution, Dr Alexandre Manette is released after two decades of imprisonment in the Bastille. Shocked to learn he’s alive, his daughter, Lucie, retrieves him. Years later, Lucie and Dr Manette take part in the trial of Charles Darnay, who is found innocent and seeks Lucie’s hand in marriage. When revolutionaries learn that Darnay is related to an evil aristocrat, they imprison him the next time he is in France. Who can rescue him?

David Copperfield
This is loosely based on the life of the author. It tells the story of the hardships, changes, and good fortune that David encounters on his life journey. When David’s mother marries the malevolent Mr Murdstone, David’s childhood happiness is destroyed forever. Can one lonely little boy show the strength and determination to survive the dangers ahead?

Bleak House
Esther, at fourteen, has never known love. Determined to live well, earn some love and overcome the shadow of her birth, she takes her first steps into an unknown world. A family curse, a manipulating lawyer, poverty and secrets threaten to destroy Esther’s world. Are the walls of Bleak House strong enough to protect her and her new friends from such powerful forces? The reader will be caught up in an unfolding mystery full of surprises. Perhaps the biggest secret of all is: Who is Nemo?

Little Dorrit
Amy Dorrit, referred to as Little Dorrit, is born in and lives much of her life at the Marshalsea prison, where her father is imprisoned for debt. She and her siblings earn meagre wages at jobs outside the prison walls, returning nightly to Marshalsea. Little Dorrit works as a seamstress for Mrs Clennam, whose son Arthur takes an interest in the Dorrit family and eventually helps free Mr Dorrit from prison.
