Francesca Simon spent her childhood on the beach in California and started writing stories at the age of eight. She wrote her first Horrid Henry book in 1994. Horrid Henry has gone on to conquer the globe; his adventures are published in 27 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Francesca has won the Children's Book of the Year Award and been a judge for the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Roald DahlFunny Prize. In 2009, in one of the proudest moments of her career, Francesca was awarded a Gold Blue Peter badge. Francesca is also a passionate ambassador for children's literacy and is a trustee of the World Book Day charity. She lives in North London with her family.
Horrid Henry, just a kid who has so many rude and naughty tricks up his sleeves. He is a boy that lives in a normal house, in an ordinary town with his mum and dad as well as his younger brother Perfect Peter. Henry’s younger brother Peter is a perfect kid, he likes his veggies, cleans after himself after dinner, enjoys reading and despises TV, Peter is a total opposite to Henry who seeks every chance to cause chaos and annoyance for other people. The books will make children laugh just as much as adults will.
From the age of 8, Francesca Simon dedicated her time to writing stories, later on she went to attend Yale and Oxford Universities to take on medieval history and literature. Finally, after Francesca has graduated she actually discovered that the direction of being a Medievalist was not something that she wants, and so began working as a freelance journalist for the likes of Vogue, Telegraph, Sunday Times. Francesca spent a lot of time reading to her son Joshua which pushed her to write story books for children which were inspired by real life scenarios. The infamous character Horrid Henry had become hugely popular and had spread around the world, published in 27 languages and sold millions of copies, even in 2008, the Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman had won the Children’s Book of the Year Award.
Horrid Henry is one of the most recognisable characters in the country. Francesca is one of the most well known writers in the nation, and she has written over 50 books. As well as being a writer herself, she is someone who pushes other aspiring writers too, she is a judge for writing competitions of several schools and was also a judge for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize. Francesca is actively involved in several charities too like The Reading Agency, Beanstalk, Storybook Dads. Horrid Henry is someone who has a bad temper, gets very mad and throws tantrums when he doesn’t get his way, he’s also insensitive and acts like a sociopath - a kid that is difficult to handle. Henry likes playing on his computer, eating bad foods however he often gets punished by his parents by being sent to his room or being banned from watching TV which might explain why Henry is acting the way he is, a combination of being compared to his little brother and his parents ineffective ways of disciplining Henry.
This is a brilliant choice for readers aged 7-9 who are looking for stories packed with adventure and mayhem but also the importance of relationships When it comes to chapter books and encouraging readings for increased periods of time to further children’s confidence, the Horrid Henry series never fails to disappoint. Curious readers will be captured from the very first book as they follow Henry on plenty of fun-filled challenges and expeditions that engage the audience, but these stories cleverly cover emotions too. They’ll meet his younger sibling Simon, where plenty of sibling squabbles occur as well as Henry’s circle of friends and his adventures at school. Understanding the daily scenarios of children in this age group, the Horrid Henry 24 book collection offers children with a selection of books that they’ll be able to relate to as they get stuck in.
Reading in the comfort of your own home is a brilliant way to support children’s learning in addition to what they read at school. Slotting in only 10 minutes a day can help to boost their confidence in becoming independent readers, whether this is out loud or to themselves. Kids books such as the Horrid Henry set are known for holding the interest of children, making them a great choice for reluctant readers too. These popular stories contain hideous behaviour, supreme naughtiness met with laugh out loud humour and jokes, all to be taken with a pinch of salt. Above all, they are imaginative, fun, and surprisingly realistic at times which makes children want to carry on reading as they work their way through the impressive 24 books. Each one has its own unique storyline that won’t let children feel as if they are reading anything repetitive. From getting nits at school, to haunted houses and zombies or even meeting the Queen, Horrid Henry appeals to kids because it presents realistic events and the views of young children.
