A.A. Milne, an Iconic British Author

Alan Alexander Milne was born in London in 1882 and for many years was a playwright before the emergence of the nation's much-loved bear. After serving in both World Wars, Milne lived in East Sussex with his wife and son, Christopher Robin. Much to Milne’s annoyance, Winnie the Pooh became a phenomenon and a household name, earning Milne fame across the globe for creating the nation's favourite bear.

Winnie the Pooh and Friends

The Winnie the Pooh stories and characters we love today were inspired by Milne’s son and his teddies. Christopher Robin Milne and the fun he would have with his toys is what sparked the imagination of his father. You can still visit Christopher Robin’s original toys which are housed in The New York Public Library.

Much of A. A. Milne and his real-life adventures with his son are featured within the Winnie the Pooh stories. Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Tigger are based on his read soft toys and the Hundred Acre Woods is based on Ashdown Forest which was outside their farmhouse in Sussex. E. H. Shepard, the illustrator that brought the stories to life, even drew on the landscapes of Ashdown Forest as inspiration for many of the illustrations he provided for the Pooh books.

Milne’s classic children's stories have been adapted on screen many times, so far there are a total of thirteen movies based on his characters. The Most recent is the 2018 adaptation called Christopher Robin starring Ewan McGregor as an older Christopher Robin revisiting his childhood.

Books by A.A. Milne have also been a popular choice as gifts for children, making these a beautiful addition to their reading library. We have a beautiful Winnie the Pooh Complete Collection 30 Books Box Set which features thirty stories broken up into small books. Reading these short stories out loud with children is a lovely way to bond and encourage their development in reading or listening skills. This boxset will look perfect on any bookshelf, whether they are a gift for a baby shower, a birthday present for a little one or for pure nostalgia purposes, this beautifully decorated box is the perfect addition to anyone's literary collection.

Winnie the Pooh Box Set

We also have a collection aimed at babies and toddlers, Disney Baby Winnie the Pooh My First Library 12 Board Books. These books include simplified stories and everyday learning stories for you and your child to read along with. For example, this collection includes Count with Pooh, A Bath with Tigger and Hundred Acre Walk to name a few. Alternatively, we have Winnie-The-Pooh The Complete Collection 6 Books Set, which is aimed at older readers. Whether it is the first time your child is reading it or if it is a story they are familiar with, this book collection is a great introduction to longer texts and reading more independently. Each book contains beautiful illustrations and comes in a charming slipcase to keep them all together.
