New Years Resolution Blog 2021
Happy new year 2021! Let’s create a new year's resolution together, why not take this opportunity to include the goal of daily reading into our lives for the new year?
At Books2Door, we have always believed that reading has a powerful effect on both children and adults alike, such as helping readers develop important reading, comprehension and specific skills. But, did you know that reading has powerful positive effects for your health and brain when we build a habit of daily reading. Reading is a magical activity, it provides us with new knowledge, it helps us build closer relationships with our children, it helps us pass important exams, it can bring communities together and form new friendships as well. Reading is truly something special that has endless good possibilities. It is so important to build a good habit of reading from a young age up to teenage-hood.
Time and time again, research has proven to us that reading literally changes our brain structure as we become more mature readers. Many times, researchers have implemented MRI scans to analyse the network of circuits and signals in our brains. As readers develop a stronger habit of reading more, those networks become strong. Many times, brain scans have shown that reading just for a time period of a few days and weeks, the brain activity has significantly increased, most apparent in the areas of Somatosensory Cortex. It is so important that in 2021, that we should encourage one another to read more books, even if that means squeezing in just 10 to 15 minutes a day into our busy lives. As parents or caretakers, we can help younger kids begin their reading journey, beginning with happy and fun story books, this can help children build a positive and warm association between reading and fun. You should definitely check out the Animal Books Collection or Charles Dickens Easy Classics!
As readers slowly develop their reading and vocabulary skills, their self esteem and confidence will mature over time too, ultimately allowing them to build better communication and strengthening their brain. Kids and younger children may still need to develop the skill to empathize with people from different backgrounds, reading various genres such as fiction titles and explore the lives of characters and different cultural environments as well as the exploration of different beliefs. Most commonly known as “Theory of Mind” which is a skill set for building important relationships. The most obvious skill development is the increase in vocabulary which can help readers in all walks of life, from tests, self expression and learning new skills.
Even the National Institute on ageing has suggested that reading is a powerful tool in helping age related cognitive decline. Reading books has also been shown to help prevent diseases like Alzheimers and reading have been implemented as a way to battle this; reading should therefore be strongly encouraged for old seniors. Not only this, reading can be a powerful way to help people reduce stress, even more so effective than activities like yoga, exercise and listening to music. There are many genres which can further encourage these positive outcomes. These genres may include Fantasy, Historical Fiction and Adult Fiction. The benefits of reading are just endless, it improves brain connectivity, naturally increases your vocabulary and understanding, helps you settle into a mood for sleeping, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, combats depression, reduces stress and helps fight and prevent cognitive decline as you get older.
